Regarding the Jellyfin Price Increase

Jellyfin to quadruple their prices following Plex's price increases (old.reddit.com)

Community iconselfhosted@lemmy.world by

If you haven’t seen it yet, we recently made the announcement that starting July 1, 2026, the price of “Jellyfin Premium+ One Super Unlimited (with Ads)” will increase to $0.00 USD*. There has been a lot of enthusiasm regarding charge backs, and we’re simply blown away by the community’s response.

It became the only reliable source of information I had. People posted links with a minimal amount of commentary, picking and choosing the best content from other social media networks. They’re not doing it to “build a brand” because that’s not a thing in the Fediverse. It’s too disjointed to be a place to build a newsletter subscription base.

I discovered this after upgrading our instance yesterday, which also upgraded all frontends to their latest versions as well. After I did, our Tesseract frontend stopped working and I noticed immediately as it’s been my primary for a while. Initially I thought it was an API version mismatch, but no, it was much worse.

I'm using my home server and coding to rebuild my brain after a stroke.

Please forgive any typos, my brian is still very much recovering. I’m not promoting anything cause nothing I’ve made yet is really worth much to anyone but my self, and everything is far from polished. I’m just sharing what I’m doing. In November ’24, I had a mid level stroke. I’ve had issues with motor skills, headaches, and short term memory, but for the most part I’m doing quite well. For the last 6-8 months, I build a home server, (AMD 3700x, 64GB of RAM, 6TBNvME, and 2x 12TB HDD, old NVIDIA 2060. I setup up Jellyfin, ripped our 400ish Blu Rays, DVDs, and TV Shows. Setup Navidrone, and ripped our CDs, Home Assistant, AudoBookshelf, ConvertX, MeTube, and several other apps mostly discovered here. I also wrote my own app to track our large physical Media Collection that has a few api calls for pulling info about the items., a dashboard app in the style of the old iGoogle, and I’ve started working on 2 other apps, one to track medical information like blood pressure, glucose, doc appts, care team, medications, etc. The other app is for TTRPG GMs to run games that will basically be a digital GM Screen with a dozen or so tools.

Relevant since we started outright rejecting agent-made PRs in awesome-selfhosted [1] and issuing bans for it. Some PRs made in good faith could probably get caught in the net, but it’s currently the only decent tradeoff we could make to absorb the massive influx of (bad) contributions. >99.9% of them are invalid for other reasons anyway. Maybe a good solution will emerge over time.

My wife needed a cycle tracker. Everything out there was either Flo (which got sued twice for sharing health data) or an abandoned GitHub project. So I built Ovumcy. Single Go binary, SQLite, Docker-ready. No analytics, no third-party APIs, no cloud. Your data stays on your server. Features: period tracking, symptom logging, predictions (ovulation, fertile window), statistics, CSV/JSON export, dark mode, Russian and English. Just pushed v0.2.5. Looking for feedback from real users.

Windscribe: Proton VPN got caught running secret price tests on users, then denied it. Their own code revealed the opposite (xcancel.com) News

Community iconprivacy@lemmy.dbzer0.com by
alapakala@quokk.au

Why is ProtonVPN lying about running price sensitivity testing on their customers? Their pricing page gives you one of two prices at random. This is A/B testing, but instead they’re saying the price difference is due to remnants of a sale. Their own code says otherwise. Price sensitivity testing is when a company quotes different people different prices for the same product to see if sales hold steady at the higher price. Not to be confused with adaptive or dynamic pricing which uses your personal data to adjust prices to you. People on ProtonVPN’s subreddit noticed they were being quoted different prices for the same thing. ProtonVPN’s General Manager replied that the differences were due to remnants of a recent sale that wasn’t “universally refreshed”. This was a lie, and we have proof. That proof is their own code sorting every visitor into a price variant. It’s labeled right in the HTML tag: ab-test:VpnHpAndPricingVpnPlusSensibility300726 Which in plain English is: VPN Homepage and Pricing for the VPN Plus plan, Sensibility test tagged 30/07/26. The price continues to flip-flop as of writing this. Expired sales don’t do this. Something like a Cloudflare-cached page doesn’t add price sensitivity A/B tests to your HTML code. Proton, if you want to run A/B tests, at least don’t lie about it to your users. Your browser does not support playing HTML5 video. You can download a copy of the file instead. Here is a description of the content: video demo
