Hello everyone! Daniel here, and Iām back with a new Linkwarden release across web and mobile.
For those who are wondering, Linkwarden is an open-source collaborative bookmarking tool that keeps permanent snapshot of the content of the links you save, so you can still access them even if the original content is no longer available. Linkwarden is available as a Cloud offering, or you can get the source code on GitHub and self-host it on your own server with no strings attached. If you find it useful, consider starring the repo so others can discover it too!
So letās get into it.
Whatās new in mobile:
- Support for self-signed certificates and custom request headers: Android now accepts self-signed certificates, and you can add custom request headers to the appās requests. This makes the app usable with instances behind a reverse proxy or auth layer like Authelia or Cloudflare Access.
- Re-preserve link formats: You can now re-generate a linkās preserved formats (screenshot, PDF, readable view) from the mobile app, useful if the original preservation failed or the page has changed since.
- Change linkās banner: You can now set a custom banner image for a link when editing it.
- Access more account options in Settings: Settings now has a āMore Account Settingsā option that opens your full account settings inside the app, using your existing session.
(Android is out, iOS is still in review and it should be out later today.)
Whatās new in web:
Refreshed, more modern design: The top navbar is removed and its functionality moved into the sidebar, plus a number of smaller UX fixes. ļæ¼
New search modal with recent search history: Press
āK(orCtrl+K) anywhere to open a search modal. It also keeps your recent searches stored locally in the browser. ļæ¼New āSystemā theme option: The theme can now follow your OS light/dark preference instead of being set manually. ļæ¼
PNG support for link banners: Link banners now accept PNG uploads in addition to JPEG.

- Assisted - AI acts on part of a task, but a human handled the bulk.
- Pair - About a 50/50 split of human made and generated.
- Generated - Human prompted, AI generated.

Part of the point of the [AIP] tag is your ability to filter these posts out.

It was close for me but I went with link warden because you can hide link cover images in the main view.

Linkwarden is a bookmark manager that allows for single html webpage backups.
Archivebox uses WARC - which produces an offline, fully navigable website
sofinzkiLovely to see that a lot of effort was made to make this much more memory efficient! The main reason I bounced off from this before was itās large footprint on my Unraid server. Will definitely take a 2nd look now!

EarMasterLet them think it. All those experts seeing AI everywhere can live under their rock and stay there. Recently an artist I personally know was criticized for using AI in his artwork - oil paintings each one signed by hand. Photographed in a way you can see itās real paint and a real place for the last 20 years. It annoys me more to see all these accusations being placed without having looked at it even one bit further.
Yeah, itās frustrating on both ends.
Readers and viewers of art are increasingly skeptical because of all the intentionally deceptive content flooding the zone.
Meanwhile, the humans actually making new things get drowned out by the slop and accused of using AI when they finally do surface.
They created BS machines that made everyone more distrustful of real human experience.
cecilkorikAgree, I donāt blame the people becoming cynical and distrustful, I think thatās a totally rational and valid response to the current situation. I blame the people (government representatives and companies, more to the point) who are making this the situation in the first place.
I donāt want to live in a world where we trust no-one and nothing. But itās delusional not to see that we do live in a world that is rapidly moving that direction. We need to do something (a lot of things) to stop it, but we also canāt pretend itās not happening.
Weāve been active before the AI-slop era, even before the existence of ChatGPT :)

Edit: I didnāt expect some people to start nitpicking phrasing and digging through my profile over this. OFC I use AI, That was never some huge secret. The point is that my workflow is not āprompt in, product outā in the vibe-coding sense.

Although I must admit that I saw an ai do it first and decided it was a good idea.
I feel like Iām going crazy, because I distinctly remember checking out this project a couple of years ago (before they were called Linkwarden, and then when they renamed it) and noticing all the ai-looking commits (especially after the rename) in the repo so I wrote off the project. Also notice how OP doesnāt deny that theyāre using it, just says he started the project before ChatGPT. I went through his profile and the AI profile picture and https://github.com/daniel31x13/gstack fork are pretty telling.
Letās be honest, a lot of FOSS projects have been inundated with ai pull requests, and I looked at some that were merged. At least the dev looks like theyāre being responsible about them. Look at the contributors for the last 6 months, claude is right there: https://github.com/linkwarden/linkwarden/commit/8bd3bd376316332693c5074a59dc3ab03559f1dc. Look at that contributorās profile and website. For another one: https://github.com/linkwarden/linkwarden/pull/1553. Look at that userās GitHub profile, look at the activity, look at his website. Iām not saying heās not a good programmer or anything like that, but be for real, heās absolutely using AI for his code, if not an ai agent of some sort.
I also find it hard to believe an app that features ai tagging wouldnāt also use ai. So it seems disingenuous to tag their Reddit post with āNo AIā in r/selfhosted.
At the end of the day, Iām not personally invested, and theyāre free to use ai in their project (it is a tool after all and can be used responsibly). But Iām really developing trust issues with how dodgy some projects are about disclosing their AI usage. Like just say you use it to debug, qa, brainstorm, or write your docs, and or that the outputs are actually reviewed by a person.
While i dislikes ai i think itās one of the only ways to create a foss software with a small time with a reasonably small number of people. But this does indeed just look like a no-effort ai post
And I get it, I do, but I think what rubs me the wrong way is how cagey the dev is about AI disclosure.
Use it for your project, itās open source (which allows me to see that AI is being used) and free to self-host. Like I mentioned previously, I do see the dev being pretty responsible about their usage from the few merge requests and individual commits I looked at.
Personally, I feel like FOSS is built on a foundation of trust, and I find it very hard to trust a dev/project that (in my opinion) lies by omission. So, while I wonāt use/contribute/pay for this project, Iām not judging anyone who does and I wish yāall the best. At the end of the day, itās your time, effort, money (if you donate and or pay for the hosted plan), and or hardware (if you choose to self-host).
Especially, after fiascos like Booklore (another project I now feel vindicated for writing off early) and the general trend of enshittification for almost all software and services, can you blame people for being a bit more skeptical?

Iām a convert. After seeing LLMs do it, and now that all platforms have easy interfaces to access them, I use them in my note taking to help memory mapping and chunking.

No, you are definitely not the only one. I tend to be more judgemental of projects that contain prolific use of emojis in general, but that has been ongoing since before AI became popular.
You are not the only one - youāre still overreacting. The use of emojis does not make it AI generated. At least try to find some other hints before accusing a possible real person of something.
Big TWho the fuck cares or takes the time to bully someone about using emojis? If you want to use emojis do it, individuality and self expression are things I personally love seeing. Say meow, use an emoji (š§āāļø is my personal favorite), purposefully speill thangz wrongggg, say yee haw and curse a bunch or donāt. The people who take the time to make bullshit comments like these are lame.

There is a bunch of these tools (linkding, karakeep are just two I know), what makes linkwarden stand out?
Diversity? Choices? Personally I use Readeck for āread it laterā, LinkWarden for actual links, and Karakeep for archiving.
OP, Iāll have to admit that Linkwarden is one of my favorite and more often used app in my stack. It just works. And I really like the iOS app, Oh, and those emojisā¦ā¦I like them. They are relational to information, and helps me equate a picture with where to find certain information, since I am a visual person.

I can already collect and organize bookmarks very easily in every browser. Other than a prettier UI, Iām not sure how this is functionally different. Am I missing something?
The capture and annotation features as well as it being non browser dependent I guess. Iām gonna switch to something like this so I can get rid of Firefox sync.
I agree, I tried it but it just felt pointless after awhile, the bookmark manager in the browser is a lot more convenient, and I dont tend to want to archive bookmarks long term. Shut it off after a few weeks. Great work by the devs though.
other_catI particularly like using it to capture a snapshot of the website for, say, my paid newsletter subscriptions that I might want to read later. That way if I do let my subscription lapse, I can still access the content I already paid for.

The most important feature to me is the offline archiving of the target link/page. Link rot is real and content can change. Capturing the site as it is when I link it means the info I wanted is now safely stored.
Thereās also the multi-user features. A family can centralize and collaborate on links.

Hey OP, thanks for this project!
I currently use instapaper, but I was curious if/how I could replace it with linkwarden. My instapaper flow is pretty simple, I add articles to it via the browser/app extension and they show up chronologically on the home screen. Then when I read the article, I archive it.
I looked at the linkwarden demo but it looks like I can only delete links.

I hope you one day add client sourced snapshot content so pages behind an authentication layer can be archived. Would also make for better snapshots on pages where pesky cookie pop-ups cover the screen..

This is a cat and mouse game. It beats some, for others we have to come up with ideas and workarounds like using the browser extension or SingleFile to upload the pages from the client side.

Social bookmarking is reddit and lemmy and piefed. Self-hosting is not going to cover this kind of tool that benefits from more users.
