Why is the "that word" being censored across lemmy?

Not sure if this is the right place, but I’ve seen this for the 3rd removed now.
Literally couldn’t use the word in the title … got a red pop-up that said “slur”.
It’s the 3rd word (singular) in the famous newspaper from New York ….
UPDATE: seems to be an issue with ani.social, thanks for all the feedback!

time
should be okay now. i put a certain domain in the slur filter rather than the domain filter. everything should be ok now
Hey, I helped!
Is there a publicly available list of domains lemmy instances filter out? Cuz transparency.
Here’s the list that your instance (lemmy.world) blocks.
Those are only blocked instances not any domains blocked.
I don’t know enough about how lemmy (or any fedi software come to that) differentiates between the two or even that it did to be honest - isn’t an instance tied to a domain?
Instances are other Fediverse software sites like Lemmy, PieFed, Mastodon, etc. The block list stops their content from appearing in your instances feed.
There are a separate list of blocks for any URL, so for example an instance could block anyone posting links to BBC.com.
First paragraph I knew :)
Second paragraph was news to me - thank you!
Why censor at all?
my bad g
Some of us dont want slop, censoring slop is good actually, if you want slop there are plenty of other instances.
H*ly fk, does this sht really do something positive for you?
I guess you must have no idea what I said cause I censored it though. Ah well, too bad!

t-i-m-e is a slur word now because it reminds us of the shitty times today that we have
i’m so glad I bought that show on sale on Apple TV
-[time]- has been redacted. Thank you for your attention. Please carry on.
All the news fit to-gone! Nothing! Shop closed, bets off!
I wonder if someone is learning a lesson about regexes on that instance. It would be very weird to replace the string ‘time’ on its own.
Obligatory https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scunthorpe_problem
Thanks so much, I knew there was some kind of term of concept for that but couldn’t find it!
I always called it the buttbuttination (of Lincoln) problem, heh.
It’s a clbuttic mistake.
Tom Scott has a video on it
I remember back in the early web days I was trying to make a post on a forum with something about Dick Van Dyke, getting a double-whammy name block. He already unfamiliar to the younger people even back then, so none of my attempts to explain who I was talking about worked. I couldn’t even say what show he starred in for them to look up, since it was also called The Dick van Dyke Show.
you could try to say they were the poorly cocksney bastard in Mary Poppins
But what’s the slur they’re hunting if they catch “time”? Is it tim, ime, ti, me or something else?
No idea and not sure if it’s right. They could be attempting to match something across whitespace or line breaks and gotten greedy. Or maybe it is just a string match and not regex and they pasted the wrong string, but that still feels weird.
Actually already found out a reasonable candidate. Someone else pointed out that ti-me in Japanese is a slur.

That’s crazy, i can’t think of a reason why thyme are banned or is a slur. Maybe the admin made a mistake?
Yeah, has to be a mistake.
Too many gifs of people shoving the redacted cube up their ass
time?
yeah … that one.
thats so weird!!
Ok, might be my instance. Thanks for the feedback.
Time, Dr. Freeman?
time
Wait, “Newsday” is a slur now?
I see time, must be something on your side or instance? Probably a mistake, I can’t see how time is a slur in any way or form.
I see the word time a lot of times here too.
The funniest thing is, even with “view source” it shows up the same for me. So I can’t even tell if you’re mocking me!
(I could by going through another instance, but I’ll just assume you are).
Nope, not mocking you.
Well, then you’re just missing out!
Reminds me of when Minecraft Bedrock censored the word “flèche” from me, the French word for “arrow”, literally an item in the game x)
elder scroll online censored the word sperm, but “whisper” was how they called the private chat, so you’d see lot of people on the global chat writing “whisper me” which was shown as “whi* *e”
That is hilarious!
Gundam Evolution has been censoring the word “corn”
So you’ve seen Gundam Uni** in the chat
Certain Pokémon games have filters preventing you from online trading Pokémon which have nicknames that include bad words. However, some Pokémon such as Cofagrigus have bad words in their names by default so you have to nickname those in order to trade them.
Your instance is ani.social and “ti-me” (ちめ) can mean bloodshot eyes or fatal error, and might be slang for a pejorative in Japanese or something that sounds close to an actual slur.
Still a stupid reason to censor the English word time on an English community, but that’s the best reason I can think for why it got zapped by a censor bot.
Which is funny because there are multiple anime with “time” in their title. So I wonder how that’s going to look.
“Tis redacted for torture, princess”
I love that one. Season 2 was actually better than the first!.
Adventure Removed!
Okay that’s pretty ridiculous though.
But also kind of funny. They should pick a new common word to ban every day until it’s just remove remove remove.
Lemmy is t-i-m-eless.
They’re afraid because removed not only conquers all, it heals all wounds.
Time?
maybe it’s my instance?
… is your instance run by Melinoë?
Death to Chronos by the way
It sounds like there’s something up with your instance. The word is t i m e, and it shows up ok here.
Must be, I can see it all. Nothing is censored except your reply.
Are you using an app or a browser? It looks like a browser to me and maybe there is an extension messing with it? Maybe somebody is pranking you? Just a thought.
Browser, lot of extensions but they aren’t to blame. Other users from my instance confirmed the same issue.

Bigot!

I wonder if t-i-m-e is a slur in a different language, because it definitely ain’t in portuguese, english, spanish, italian or japanese
scunthorpe
time?
Ageist slur
How did you know I was old??
We can all tell, but most of us are too polite to say anything.
What is this from?
The gloriously awful Action 52 cartridge for the original Nintendo.
No time to explain
Looks fine this time!
Because everyone knows to say it right you say, Morris Day and the motherfucking TIME.
Oh-we-oh-we-oh
I’m confused, one instance can censor other one too?
I think it only affected ani.social users, so no. It was a local issue.
